proposed ordinance - school facilities consideration

Up one level
As Oldham County has experienced in the past, Shelby County has begun to have problems building schools fast enough to keep up with the county's rapid residential growth. When growth exceeds capacities of the public school system, the school system begins to play a game of catch up by raising property taxes to pay for constructing more school buildings. But the school system cannot catch up as the increased revenues come in a year or two after the demand presented itself. Shelby County magistrate Jim Robertson has proposed an ordinance, based on the one in place in Oldham County, that would give the school system help in responding to growth demands in a more timely manner. The Shelby County Fiscal Court has sent the proposed School Capacity Ordinance to the Triple S Planning Commission for its review and recommendation. See the last two articles below.

Sentinel-News 11-11-05
The Sentinel-News reported on some of the happenings at and after a public forum, hosted by Magistrate Jim Robertson, on a proposed zoning ordinance and subdivision regulation that would empower the Shelby County Fiscal Court, the Shelbyville City Council, the Simpsonville City Commission, and the Triple S Planning Commission to consider whether or not Shelby County's Public School system would have capacities to handle the new students from proposed zone changes. If the subdivision regulations of Shelby County also were amended to include this change, then the Triple S Planning Commission could take the same consideration into account when development plans were presented to them.
